Coming of Age Day (成人の日 Seijin no hi)

Seijin no Hi is celebrated annualy on the second Monday in January to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached the age of (20 years old 二十歳 hatachi) over the past year, and to help them realize that they have become adults. This also reflects both the expanded rights but also increased responsibilities expected of new adults.

Festivities include coming of age ceremonies (成人式 Seijin-shiki) held at local and prefectural offices. Government officials give speeches, and small presents are handed out to the newly recognized adults.

Most women wear cute and stylish 振袖 Furisode, a style of Kimono with long sleeves that hang down, and 草履 zori sandals. A full set of the clothing is expensive so it is usually borrowed from a relative or rented. Men also wear a traditional dress 袴 hakama, but nowadays there are also some men who wear formal western clothes such as a suit and tie.

Next week Monday (January 13th)the Hatachi’s will celebrate their coming of age. Since its a public holiday, maybe you can join the celebration and learn more about one of the important traditional event in Japan.
