Valentine’s day in Japan

February 14 in Japan is a one of the most awaited event for most Japanese especially for young women.

Unlike most countries, the women gives chocolates to men while men are not expected to give or do anything on this day. However, men are expected to return gifts are are at least two or three times more valuable than the gifts they received in Valentine’s day.

Many women, office ladies in particular, give chocolates to their co-workers which is also know as giri-choko (義理チョコ), giri “obligation” and choko “chocolate”. This contrasts with honmei-choko (本命チョコ, favorite chocolate), chocolate given to loved one, which most of the time are self-made or self-baked chocolates. Girl-friends also exchange chocolate referred to as tomo-cho(友チョコ); from tomo meaning “friend”.
This gives boost to anuual sales of Japanese chocolate companies as half of their sales are earned this month.

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!
